ABOUT CIALIS

Cialis (brand name of the drug taladafil) is used to treat the condition known as erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence. It has been offered in the United States since 2003. Its main advantage over other oral ED drug treatments is its effectiveness period: it allows the patient to have an erection when sexually aroused for as long as 36 hours after taking the pill.

Cialis is offered in tablets of different doses (the right dose for the patient is to be determined by the patient's doctor). The patient takes one tablet at least 30 minutes before sexual activity in order to be able to have an erection when sexually stimulated. Cialis can be taken as often as once per day.

ABOUT ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

Erectile dysfunction (ED), commonly known as impotence, is the condition in which a man fails to achieve or maintain erection. ED occurs in various forms, from mild to severe: some patients cannot have erection at all while some experience the effects of ED only sporadically. Erectile dysfunction may be caused by various diseases, injuries, and conditions. It may be caused by any condition that diminishes the blood flow to the penis.

A common misconception about ED is that it is solely or mostly a psychological problem. This is a confusion of cause and effect. Research has, in fact, shown that only about 20% of erectile dysfunction cases stem from psychological problems as a primary cause. In the rest of the patients, ED has a physical cause, and sex-related psychological issues are either nonexistent or they have appeared as a result of ED rather than the cause.

In any case, it is important to note that ED is a medical condition unrelated to such issues as lack of desire or lack of attraction to one's partner.

HOW CIALIS WORKS

Cialis works by increasing the blood flow to the penis and thus intensifying the patient's physical response to sexual stimulation. Cialis is a treatment for ED only; it does not increase sexual desire and should not be used as an aphrodisiac. It will not cause automatic erection if the patient is not sexually excited, nor will it cause an hours-long erection (which is actually a painful and dangerous medical condition).

SIDE EFFECTS OF CIALIS

The most commonly cited side effects of Cialis are headaches, upset stomach, and back or muscle aches. These effects usually go away by themselves. If they persist, seem unusual, or are otherwise bothersome, the patient should consult a doctor.

RESTRICTIONS ON USING CIALIS

Cialis should not used without the approval of a doctor. It is approved for use by adult men only. It should not be used by patients whose medical condition prevents them from having sex (for example, patients with certain heart conditions). Patients using nitrates (commonly found in medicine for chest pains) or alpha-blockers (other than Flomax 0.4 mg once daily) cannot take Cialis, as the combination of the drugs may cause blood pressure to drop to dangerous levels. In addition, patients should not consume large amounts of alcohol when taking Cialis.
